EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that allows people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. EMDR Therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma.
EMDR is the most widely researched treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D.) Anyone experiencing a trauma such as being in a car accident, witnessing a traumatic event, etc., can experience P.T.S.D.
The mind, as well as the body, naturally moves toward health. If you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. But if a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain. Once the foreign object is removed, healing resumes. Likewise, if the mind is blocked, or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes.
Using the EMDR protocols and procedures, therapists trained in EMDR help clients activate their natural healing processes.
